It’s spring break here in Maryland and I’m taking a pause from our usual AI news roundup. Our joyful getaway in Bethany Beach, Delaware with several other families is coming to a close. Between beach walks, bonfires, group dinners, and lots of board games, I found myself using ChatGPT in some funs ways—like teaching us all how to play new board games on the fly and creating illustrated keepsakes from our favorite vacation photos.
So in the spirit of family time and spring break, this week I’m spotlighting a favorite activity: using ChatGPT to create your very own family crest.
Here’s how to do it...
Create a Family Crest With ChatGPT
Family crests, also known as coats of arms, date back to medieval times. Originally used to identify knights in battle, they evolved into symbols of identity, passed down through generations. Each element of a crest — shapes, colors, animals, and mottos, was chosen to represent values, strengths, and legacy. Today, they’re a fun and meaningful way for to celebrate your family’s unique story.
Step 1: Gather the Family and Brainstorm
Have each family member think about 2–3 things that feel uniquely them. These might include:
Think about a favorite hobby, sports teams, an animal that fits their personality, a favorite color, or something activity they love to do.
Then, as a family, come up with 3–4 shared elements:
A place that matters to you (like a specific beach, mountains, or your hometown)
An activity that you enjoy doing together (church, hiking, etc.)
The family pet
A value you all believe in (like togetherness, humor, adventure)
Step 2: Use This ChatGPT Prompt
Once your list is ready, open ChatGPT and paste in this prompt:
"Hi ChatGPT! Can you help my family design a family crest? There are [number] of us. Here’s what matters to us individually and as a family:
[Family Member 1: hobbies, values, symbols]
[Family Member 2: hobbies, values, symbols]
[Etc.]
As a family, we love [shared interest]
As a family, we value [shared value]
We have a [pet type] named [pet name].
We want a crest that reflects all this, with symbols and colors to match.”
Step 3: Make It Visual
ChatGPT will give you a text description of your crest based on your inputs. Make any adjustments. Then, ask ChatGPT to create the illustration, like this:
Bring this to life as an illustrated crest.
Bonus:
Have each family member "present" their favorite symbol and why it fits them—like your own little crest ceremony.
Display it in your home or turn it into a flag.

We are a family of 4. Two adults and 2 boys. The youngest enjoys soccer, baseball, and basketball. He likes the Orioles and 76ers. His favorite color is blue. Our oldest served in the Coast Guard, enjoys basketball, his favorite team is the Miami Heat, and he collects Pokemon cards. The boys also like Philadelphia because they grew up there. My husband is a Mets fan, attended West Point and is a runner. Mom likes hot pink, enjoys wine, and dancing. Plus, we have 2 Havanese dogs. Can you design a family Crest for the Dominguez family?
